CCEMS-CCFA Jan 16, 2026 CE The 6 Killers of Chest Pain

This comprehensive training course is designed for prehospital and emergency care providers seeking to deepen their understanding of critical, life-threatening causes of chest pain. Using an engaging case study learning model, the course will explore the "Six Killers of Chest Pain" (and one bonus killer) to enhance diagnostic skills, understanding of pathophysiology, and effective prehospital management.

Learning Objectives

 

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

 

  1. Analyze and Differentiate: Recognize and distinguish the key signs and symptoms that differentiate the "Six Killers of Chest Pain" in the prehospital setting.
  2. Apply Pathophysiology: Explain the underlying pathophysiology for each of the following conditions:
    • ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction (STEMI), with a focus on Inferior MI presentations.
    • Aortic Dissection.
    • Cardiac Tamponade and common etiologies.
    • Pulmonary Embolism (PE), emphasizing critical history components.
    • Esophageal Perforation, including Boerhaave Syndrome.
    • Wide Complex Tachycardias (WCT).
  3. Recognize Atypical Presentations: Identify differences in clinical presentation, specifically comparing STEMI in male versus female patients.
  4. Formulate Treatment Plans: Develop appropriate and timely prehospital treatment strategies for each life-threatening cause of chest pain discussed.
  5. Manage Secondary Conditions: Summarize the critical presentation, management, and pathophysiology of Tension Pneumothorax (Bonus Case Study).
