AMS and the Hypoglycemic Patient
The purpose of this training was to run an unknown medical scenario of an adult patient with a hypoglycemic emergency. Reviewed Denver Metro Protocols for Universal Altered Mental Status (4010), Hypoglycemia (4050), and medication protocols for Dextrose (9090) for IV-certified providers, Oral Glucose (9240) for basic providers, and Midazolam for ALS providers in case of seizure secondary to hypoglycemia. Discussed AEIOU-TIPS, and specifically stroke and the Cincinnati Prehospital Stroke Scale, and syncope protocols. Also discussed agency protocol for patients refusing transport (AMA refusals) after glucose and/or dextrose administration. Discussed A+P of Type 1 and Type II diabetes and how this patient would be treated if he/she were hyperglycemic instead. This course was run in several cohorts so each team responding worked in a group of 4-5.
