Autism Awareness and Response for the First Responder Level 1 Training Course draft 2

This is the exam for a certificate of completion for Autism Awareness and Response for the First Responder. Participants must have taken the 4-hour workshop and been assigned this exam. All questions must be answered and participants must pass with an 80%.

Target Audience

This 4-hour workshop is for first responders, including EMR, EMT, Paramedics, Firefighters, Flight Paramedics, Law Enforcement, Search and Rescue, Park Rangers, Nurses, Physicians, other healthcare practitioners, and community & public organizations who may encounter autistic individuals in their work or community.

Learning Objectives

1.       Describe the core characteristics and varying presentations of Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

2.       Name common communication styles for individuals with ASD and demonstrate strategies for effective communication.

3.       Describe the impact of sensory processing differences for individuals with ASD and demonstrate strategies to create a more supportive and less overwhelming environment.

4.       Name common behavioral responses in individuals with ASD, particularly during stressful situations, and describe de-escalation techniques and behavioral support strategies

5.     Demonstrate how to modify assessment and treatment approaches to better accommodate the needs of individuals with ASD in prehospital and emergency settings.
