Avalanche Medicine, Triage and Introduction to the LUCAS Device
Aaron Parmet is a nurse of epidemiology, and EMT, and Avalanche Technician with Colorado Rapid Avalanche Deployment and an avalanche educator at Colorado Mountain College. This presentation was on how to triage for single and multiple patients in an avalanche. He presented and the group discussed what kills patients in avalanches (asphyxia, trauma, hypothermia), the treatment of patients based on the pathophysiology and the logistical complexities of doing BLS or ALS medicine in an austere environment. Aaron introduced the LUCAS device, a mechanical CPR device "mCPR," now that it can be inserted into the field if requested from Flight for Life. Hands-on practice with the LUCAS device using mannequins.
