This lesson is designed to equip Emergency Medical Services (EMS) providers with the knowledge and hands-on skills necessary to effectively stabilize suspected fractures or dislocations in remote or wilderness environments using readily available, improvised materials. In the backcountry, access to standard splinting equipment is often limited, necessitating resourcefulness and creativity to minimize further injury and manage patient pain during extraction.

Learning Objectives
- Identify the essential components required for effective splinting (rigid material, padding, and securing material).
- Select appropriate improvised materials for splinting from a wilderness environment.
- Demonstrate correct technique for immobilizing an upper extremity fracture (e.g., forearm) using improvised materials.
- Demonstrate correct technique for immobilizing a lower extremity fracture (e.g., tibia/fibula) using improvised materials.
- Demonstrate correct technique for immobilizing an unstable pelvis using improvised materials.
