Dan Hatlestad, EMS Adjunct Instructor, BLS Airway Lab 2026 Common Spirit Hands-on Skills Mini conference

EMTs will master airway management and oxygen therapy by escalating care based on patient needs. The curriculum covers low-flow oxygen delivery via nasal cannula for stable patients and high-flow concentrations using a non-rebreather mask for those in respiratory distress. For patients with failing respiratory efforts or pulmonary edema, CPAP provides continuous positive pressure and improves gas exchange. EMTs can manage the airway with measure and insert oropharyngeal airways (OPA) in unconscious patients without a gag reflex and nasopharyngeal airways (NPA) for those with a gag reflex. Finally, the bag-valve mask (BVM) serves as the cornerstone for providing positive-pressure ventilation to apneic patients, emphasizing the importance of a proper seal and appropriate tidal volume. Capnography and pulse oximetry are used to assess the adequacy of ventilation and oxygenation.

Target Audience

EMS providers

Learning Objectives

  1. Selection and Sizing: Correctly identify, measure, and insert the appropriate basic airway adjunct (OPA or NPA) based on the patient’s level of consciousness and physical landmarks.

  2. Device Integration: Determine the appropriate oxygen delivery device (nasal cannula vs. non-rebreather) and flow rate required to maintain an SpO2 of at least 94%.

  3. Ventilation Proficiency: Demonstrate the ability to perform effective single-rescuer and two-rescuer BVM ventilation, ensuring adequate chest rise while avoiding gastric inflation.

  4. Capnography and Pulse Oximetry: Identify the appropriate use and values for assessment of ventilation and oxygenation
