Learning Objectives
Objectives
Program will use class lecture(s), hands-on practical’s and scenarios to review topics. All topics structured after National Ski Patrol’s, Outdoor Emergency Care, Refresher Cycle A Program.
Airway/Respiration/Ventilation objectives include: review and demonstrate application/use of airway suction to clear an airway (rigid and flexible suction catheters); sizing & placement of oropharyngeal airway and nasopharyngeal; O2 administration (assembly & disassembly of O2 tank and regulator assembly); use of nasal canula, non-rebreather mask, and bag-valve mask. Additionally, objectives will include assessment and management of patient in respiratory distress (includes assessing breath sounds & assisting with inhaler). Students will be required to individually demonstrate hands-on skills using provided manikins and other equipment as required.
Cardio objectives include: demonstrate assessment and treatment of patient in a cardiovascular emergency (both male and female patients); describe and demonstrate assisting patient in administration of nitroglycerin and aspirin. Additional objects will include demonstration of CPR administration in prehospital/field setting (CPR administration in toboggan).
Medical objectives include: review and demonstrate proper care of patient with following medical conditions: transient ischemic attack; stroke; altered mental status brought on by a diabetic emergency.
Operations objectives include review of Loveland Ski Area protocol for requesting additional patient care from outside resources (Clear Creek EMS and St Anthony Hospital ED). Objectives covered by lecture followed by question and answers.
Trauma objectives include: students to review, practice and demonstrate spinal immobilization. Spinal immobilization will require students to work in teams to demonstrate: back boarding from a supine position, back boarding from a seated position, C-Collar sizing and application, pelvic wrap, and movement of patient with fractured pelvis to scoop. Demonstration of ski helmet removal, ski boot removal (ski and board), patient drags, lifts and carries, and demonstrate recovery of patients from ‘jams & pretzels’ to anatomic position. Trauma objectives will include review and demonstrate care for upper extremities: shoulder, scapula, clavicle, humerus, elbow, forearm and wrist. Students will be required to demonstration use and application of traction splinting (use of HARE and KTD devices) for femur fractures.
Colorado State Topics Case Management: objectives include review and discussion of patient care with case study. Additionally, objectives include: review and demonstrate patient assessment for adult and pediatric patients (both medical and trauma) using the National Ski Patrol, Outdoor Emergency Care patient assessment criteria (5-parts: scene size-up, primary assessment w/ABCD, history taking, secondary assessment and reassessment); demonstrate how to assess the pupils and eye movement (PEERL); demonstrate how to assess the following vitals: pulse, respirations, blood pressure (auscultation & palpation), oxygen saturation (using pulse oximeter); demonstrate how to assess chest for trauma using LAP method (listen, auscultation, palpation).
