Midseason Medical Review with Medical Direction
Dr. Doucette is the ABSP medical director. He came to speak to patrollers about this season’s most acute incidents so far. Topics covered included but were not limited to orthopedic injuries including the difference between AC separations, clavicle fracture and anterior shoulder dislocations; humeral head fracture and considerations for geriatric patients; femur fracture case studies including comminuted fracture with post-operative complications including blood loss; physiology of compartment syndrome with tibia plateau fracture and external fixator surgery; spine injury with internal bleeding (multi-system trauma) and discussion of use of protective equipment for competitive skiers (spine protectors). Discussed pain management for BLS (splinting and PO ibuprofen) and ALS providers including fentanyl dosing and possibly adding new medications to our agency’s protocols.
