Learning Objectives
Learning Objective: By the end of the EMS Environmental Emergencies class, participants will be able to:
- Recognize common environmental emergencies encountered in pre-hospital settings, including but not limited to:
- Heat-related illnesses (heat exhaustion, heat stroke)
- Cold-related injuries (hypothermia, frostbite)
- Poisoning due to environmental toxins (chemical, biological, or radiological)
- Allergic reactions triggered by environmental factors (e.g., insect stings, plant exposure)
- Near-drowning incidents and water-related emergencies
- Wilderness emergencies (e.g., animal bites, environmental hazards)
- Demonstrate proficiency in conducting rapid scene assessments to identify environmental hazards and prioritize patient care interventions accordingly.
- Apply appropriate treatment protocols for managing environmental emergencies, including:
- Implementing measures to prevent further exposure and minimize patient harm.
- Utilizing appropriate methods for temperature regulation (cooling or warming techniques).
- Administering antidotes or supportive care for toxin exposures.
- Implementing first aid measures for common environmental injuries
