Airway and hemorrhage control are two clinical areas where rapid intervention can truly save lives. The Flight For Life flight team will combine these two fundamentals into a real world scenario for valuable training.

Since it’s adoption in the early 1980s, the BCDTM has been the defacto gold standard for rope rescue belay efficacy. A number of standards such as NFPA 2500 (1983) and ASTM F2436 utilize BCDTM parameters as the underpinnings of their performance criteria. As innovation in the rope rescue community continues at record pace with regard to tools, techniques and strategies, many have begun to question the validity of the BCDTM. Does the BCDTM currently address the capabilities and limitations of modern ropework systems? How effective is the BCDTM in assessing Two Tensioned Rope Systems?

This session will review a search that took place over several weeks in Colorado in 2023-24. Modern decision theory as proposed by Daniel Kahneman (Thinking, Fast and Slow), Leon Festinger and Barry Staw (Cognitive Dissonance, Disconfirmed Expectancies) and Irving Janis (Groupthink), will provide a framework to review the facts of this search. The purpose of the session is to help searchers consider their own cognitive processes when making decisions about where and how to deploy resources.
